Travelers should expect a busy 10 days at MSP airport during the holiday. Here are some tips to make it easier.

A surge of holiday travelers are expected at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport during the next ten days.

Thanksgiving holiday travel is expected to equal or surpass that seen in 2021, according to Metropolitan Airport Commission officials. On the busiest days, officials say more than 32,000 passengers are expected to clear security checkpoints. The MAC operates the airport.

The busiest departure day is expected to be the Wednesday before Thanksgiving Day, according to MAC officials, while Sunday, Nov. 28, is expected to be the second busiest day.

MAC officials also anticipate a hike this year in connecting travelers — those who clear security checkpoints at other airports before traveling through MSP.

“Thanksgiving travel is spread out over a week or more but MSP will still experience certain days and particular times when there will be heavy spikes in passenger traffic similar to pre-pandemic years,” said Brian Ryks, CEO of the MAC, in a statement. “We’ll also experience times of heavy traffic on our roadways and terminal curb areas as passengers arrive to check-in or depart our terminals.”

MSP airlines are operating flights to 122 destinations this month, according to MAC officials. Through the first nine months of 2022, passenger activity is up 30 percent in comparison to the same period in 2021.

Travelers are asked to keep in mind these tips:

• Try to generally arrive two hours before domestic flights and three hours before international flights. More specific guidelines can be given by airlines.

• Additional staff will be on hand during high-traffic periods to direct passengers to appropriate lines and help with direction.

• There also may be more traffic on the roads around the airport this week. At busy times, drivers can pick up or drop off passengers at either Terminal 1’s departures or arrivals levels.

• MSP’s cell phone lot on Post Road offers free parking and allows motorists to wait until they receive a call from the arriving passenger when they are ready to be picked up at curbside.
