Travelers Championship becoming ‘elevated tournament’ 2023 PGA

The annual tournament in Cromwell is one of four tournaments with elevated status in 2023, including elevated purses for the winner of the tournament.

CROMWELL, Conn. — Some of the best golfers in the world will now have more to compete for at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, as the PGA Tour has announced the tournament as one of four tournaments to be brought up to “elevated status” in 2023.

The new additions will bring the total number of “elevated” PGA Tour events to 13, after PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan announced the first nine elevated events for the 2022-2023 season.

In addition to the Travelers Championship, the PGA Tour announced the three additional tournaments to be elevated this season are the WM Phoenix Open, the RBC Heritage, played in Hilton Head Island, S.C., and the Wells Fargo Championship, played in Charlotte, N.C.

“Helping us deliver an unmatched product to our fans, who will be all but guaranteed to see the best players competing against each other in 20 events or more throughout the season,” said Monahan, speaking at the TOUR Championship. “This is an extraordinary and unprecedented commitment, a testament to who these guys are and what they believe in.”

According to the PGA, players who finished in the top 20 in the 2022 Player Impact Program are required to participate in all elevated events for which they are eligible, as well as at least three additional events. The commitment to compete in a pre-determined schedule, and play at least 20 times per year, is the result of unprecedented collaboration among the TOUR’s top players.

The PGA says all four of these newly elevated events will each have a $20 million purse.

The Travelers Championship is scheduled to be played at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell June 22-25.

Xander Schauffele was the winner of the 2021 Travelers Championship, winning the $8.3 million purse, and earning a $1.494 million share of that purse.

The PGA Tour says the four newly-announced elevated events are for 2023 only, meaning the Travelers Championship will likely rotate elevated status between tournaments each season.
