Follow these twinkling tips to plan one on a budget . . .

LOCATION LOCATION: Head out of towns and cities to find the most suitable spot.

Some of the best places in the UK include Northumberland, the North Yorkshire Moors and Exmoor National Park, according to the RSPB.

Simply leaving a built-up area will help.

The more rural you get, away from light pollution, the more you will see.

But do not pick a cloudy night.

PACK THE KIT: You need gear that can cope with the cold and wet weather conditions.

Wear waterproof clothes and take a waterproof mat plus piles of blankets to huddle under.

Hand and feet warmers will provide welcome heat.

Keep all the family toasty with a pack of ten warmers from Decathlon, £6.99.

A flask of hot chocolate will make the trip all the sweeter.

WIN A GOLD STAR: A little bit of homework will help you get the most from your experience.

Find out about the major stars and constellations at gostargazing.co.uk.

Pack a star chart as part of your kit.

The RSPB shop has a guide to the night sky for £3.75 (shopping.rspb.org.uk).

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY: Time your trip to perfection.

Tomorrow should be a good night for stargazing as it will be a new moon, with very little light, which will make the stars seem brighter.

Check out the astronomical events calendar at Gostargazing to plan a trip for a different day.

WELL RED: Experts at Wheelwrights, which lets holiday homes in the Lake District, say it takes 30 minutes for eyes to adjust to darkness and view stars.

White light from a phone or normal torch makes it harder.

Use a red-light torch, such as the Joylit for £7.99 at Amazon, to look at your map.
